Questions Parents Ask About Speech Sound Support and Social Skills Resources
How do you know when it’s time to seek professional support for speech sounds?
A few signs that it may be time to reach out: your child is hard to understand by people outside your immediate family, they’re aware that others have difficulty understanding them and it’s affecting their confidence, they’re getting older and certain sounds like R or a lisp are still present and not resolving on their own, or they’ve expressed embarrassment or frustration about the way they sound. Some speech sound errors do resolve naturally with age, but others need direct instruction to correct, and the earlier support begins, the easier it tends to be. If you’ve been noticing something and wondering whether it’s worth addressing, it usually is. A speech evaluation is the best way to get a clear picture of where your child is and what, if anything, needs to be worked on.
What social skills resources for parents does Pyzza Speech Therapy offer?
There are several ways to support your child's social communication skills, depending on what fits your family best. For families in the Phoenix area, I offer 1:1 speech therapy and the CONNECT Program, a small-group social skills program for neurodivergent tweens, teens, and young adults. For families anywhere, the Conversation Skills for Better Friendships course is a self-paced at-home program you and your child can work through together. I also offer free resources including a conversation skills quiz, a parent training on social skills for neurodivergent tweens and teens, and a speech sounds practice guide.
What are some speech and language tips for parents who want to support their child at home?
One of the most effective things you can do is create low-pressure opportunities for speech sound and conversation practice in everyday moments such as car rides and dinner conversations. Avoid turning every interaction into a teaching moment, celebrate small wins, and try to use the same language and framework your child is learning in speech therapy sessions or through a program so the skills start to feel consistent across settings.
What social skills tips for parents do you recommend?
If your child is struggling to make or keep friends, missing social cues that seem to come naturally to their peers, or feeling anxious or withdrawn in social situations, those are signs that explicit social skills instruction from a specialist could make a big difference. Social skills don't always develop naturally for neurodivergent kids and teens, and they need to be specifically taught, practiced, and reinforced. If you've been noticing a gap for a while and wondering whether to get support, that instinct is worth paying attention to. While you are inquiring, you can browse my social skill resources above.
Are there SLP resources for parents to help them understand what their child is working on in speech therapy?
Yes. When your child works with me directly, I keep you informed after every session so you always know what we're working on and how to support it at home.
